I know this is weird and I also think this is weird of me to do, but here I am! ><;

This all started over the ponies that qinop from DA posted as comments. He did it twice and even mentioned it on one of his stories (which was pretty cute by the way [link]). Out of curiosity I asked, cause I think it’s kinda weird for a grown-ups to like ponies. But poking around it I found out that he’s not the only one, there’s a massive following of older males for this series and they even have their own site! And they call themselves, BRONY (or bronies), I read that it’s short for bro and pony/ponies. Female fans are also called themselves that. It’s obviously made for kids but here we are. I don’t think I’m Brony though since I only draw these just because I want to.

First one is inspired by Naruto. What I really wanted is to actually make a pony version of my avatar, thinking of colors and symbols to use, at some point I wanted to give it a name and thought of naming it Spiral Fishcake. Spiral Fishcake is the English translation of Uzumaki Naruto’s name. I ended up making 2 versions of this cause I wanted to stay as close as possible to the original designs but then again there is clothed version of the ponies. I have a design mistake with this one, when I did the sketches I’m only at episode 4, not until episode 11 that I realized that the design of the male pony is different from the female pony.


Second is inspired by Gakupoid. Since I made a Naruto version it’s only natural that I do a Gakupoid version as well. But honestly I don’t think this is the best version out there, cause I love this version a LOT!! >>> [link]


And lastly, my avatar! One thing that drove me insane while designing this is the color and cutie mark/symbol I want to use. I like black, red and purple but these colors are already been used by the main characters of the story. I wanted to use red but it actually looks bad so I ended up using pasty skin color. The same kind of skin tone I use when drawing vampires and spirits, something white-grey color. That cutie mark is so stupid but I couldn’t think of anything else, so there a pencil and scribbles. And she doesn't have a name yet, they all have cute-y names, I can’t think of one… I’m thinking of naming her Vanilla though (yeah my obsession with that song LOL)


The one I posted in the beginning is obviously me and Gakupo. I like doing that! LOL

Surprisingly these didn’t take me long to make. I don’t need to create so much layers and the lineart was pretty simple and basically copied the poses from existing artworks online (yay for cheating?). I sketched all these in one afternoon and one by one colored them before going to sleep. I didn’t use many layers and basically clicked on Fill button all the time. Collectively this took me 8 hours to make and probably spent an hour or less on each pony design. The background is always a pain to me and takes most of my time, so I basically gave up on it and placed crappy backgrounds.

As for the series, I’m only at episode 15 (there’s 26 episode online so far). But one thing to note is that this isn’t like the cartoons I watch as a child. Like what qinop said, the characters are almost human or they have human personality. I tried to remember all the cartoons I used to watch and remember that most of them are musical and good-prevails-over-evil stories. I know it’s not bad but more likely those cartoons are there to only distract kids. This made me realized why I fell in love with Anime/Manga stories, cause the characters have human personalities and some of the situations even resembles real life conflicts. I know Disney stories are like that too but Disney is more into inserting positive life lessons.

Also when I started watching this, it reminded me so much of Powerpuff Girls or PPG (I love that series!), it turns out that Lauren Faust is responsible for the concept designs for My Little Pony G4. G4 means generation 4, this series has been going on since 1980’s, it’s older that I am!! Also the season 1 (and season 2) is animated at Top Draw Animation here in the Philippines!! I’m so happy to read that, I looked up their site and they offer trainings and OJTs, oh gawd I wish I live near there!!

Fave character so far is Twilight Sparkle, she’s the closest to my personality. And her names makes me laugh~!! Twilight Sparkle, cause in the story TWILIGHT there are vampires that SPARKLE!! LOL ...no? okay... I also like Fluttershy cause she’s the cutest, totally reminds me of Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls.

If you’re interested I recommend you start by watching the first 2 episodes cause probably the only part that is worth looking at. (the rest of the series, for me, is quite trivial). Those 2 episodes are reminiscent of the anime/manga Mojacko, especially the part about the missing element. Anyway, it’s very predictable for “adults”.

As for why there’s a huge following of older males? I dunno, I asked qinop that as well and he doesn’t know either. But visiting the site that he recommended and as he explained, the followers mostly use this series as inspiration for art and fanfictions, which is not bad of course. Why would I draw and write this if I think it’s destructive, ne?

Also, my brother saw me watching this and thought I’ve gone crazy. He even pointed me to this video.


Well that’s about it, with me and these little ponies. I’ll try to watch the rest of the series someday cause it’s starting to feel ridiculous that I’m watching this. *nervous laugh* Anyway, I really wanna watch FLCL, Mr. Brain, Kamen Rider Decade: All Riders vs. Dai-shocker and Fuurin Kazan~! (the list is getting longer, believe me there’s more) GACKT-sama!!! <3
